After surviving a shipwreck, Viola finds herself a stranger in Illyria. Deciding to dress herself as a boy to serve Duke Orsino, she soon falls in love with him--and trips into quite a love triangle when the countess Olivia, whom Orisno loves, falls in love with the disguised Viola. In Twelfth Night , Shakespeare introduces a cast of uproarious characters including Malvolio, Toby Belch, and Andrew Aguecheek , and tells a story of fickle fortune, mourning, love, and reunion. That strain again! Enough; no more: 'Tis not so sweet now as it was before. O spirit of love! That instant was I turn'd into a hart; And my desires, like fell and cruel hounds, E'er since pursue me. Captain This is Illyria, lady.
Would Shakespeare be the first name to come to mind? Although the idea of Shakespeare remains timeless, the plays themselves have somewhat declined in prominence, with only a small few enjoying healthy and regular revivals. Because of such, the question facing any theatre company looking to produce a staging of Shakespeare continues to be how to represent its narrative in a form that is engaging, amusing and understandable to a contemporary audience? Whilst it remains true that Shakespeare still has relevance within modern-day society, we tend to see his original source material altered in such a way that it has become unrecognisable. Even productions of the plays themselves have become un-Shakespearean with a modern trend seeing their scripts abridged and language and comic references modernised. With these thoughts in mind and the primary question still in full force, we must justify why this production of Twelfth Night presents itself in the way that it does. A typical trope within Shakespearean comedy is music.
In the kingdom of Illyria, a nobleman named Orsino lies around listening to music, pining away for the love of Lady Olivia. He cannot have her because she is in mourning for her dead brother and refuses to entertain any proposals of marriage. Meanwhile, off the coast, a storm has caused a terrible shipwreck. A young, aristocratic-born woman named Viola is swept onto the Illyrian shore. Finding herself alone in a strange land, she assumes that her twin brother, Sebastian, has been drowned in the wreck, and tries to figure out what sort of work she can do.
It uses the New Cambridge Shakespeare text, as used by the Royal Shakespeare Company and educational institutions across the world. Download PDF booklet. The Merchant of Venice. Here the themes of disguise, deception and cross-wooing all appear.
Modernising Twelfth Night.
Shortened, original language script with stunning photos. Brought to life with modern narration. Shakespeare's incomparable love story is brought alive for students through brilliant production photographs and a modern narration in tandem with his original language. Colour photographs from a variety of productions show the passion, violence and despair created by this fatal romance. Three modern narrators act as a chorus commenting on the events. Their dialogue clearly marked in the text as not being part of Shakespeare's play explains, where necessary, things that might not be immediately obvious to present day students - such as Juliet's parents' attitude to her marriage.
This was a BBC series that adapted eight of Shakespeare's history plays for television. I followed the text as I watched. The play was full of intrigue, treachery, betrayals, murders, battles, and rude jokes; by the time it finished, I was hooked. Shakespeare's beautiful language had dazzled me. Of course, at that age I didn't understand all the words, but I fell in love with the way they sounded. Shakespeare has been with me ever since. After university, I taught English in a comprehensive school, which involved more contact with Shakespeare, including appearing in amateur productions of The Winter's Tale and King Lear.
