Advances in diagnostics, drugs, and devices have revolutionized cardiology practice, and improved quality of life of the patients. However, awareness, achievements, and advances in cardiac health care have enhanced the demands and expectations of the community, which lacks awareness about the social, economic, administrative, professional, and technical constraints or limitations of implementation. Being unfamiliar with medical ethics and legal aspects of care, and suboptimal virtues among physicians, have led to patients and the public utilizing legal remedies. In addition, sophistication of medical practice, increasing costs of health care, involvement of insurance systems, increased awareness and high expectations from the community and patients, and increased participation of the media have altered the attitude toward claiming compensation and acquisition of health care delivery among the public. In view of the changing trends of consumers and emerging areas in health care, providers must get accustomed to patient empowerment and come up to their expectations. Principles of ethics and legal issues have to be discussed at every stage of medical education.

Conducting research is a fascinating but challenging activity that involves very different ethical issues, such as bias, fraud, plagiarism, conflicts of interest, falsification of research results, informed consent, attribution of authorship and adequacy of peer review publication processes. Through a combination of theory and practice, during this course students will critically analyse research ethics topics and case studies and learn how to manage and evaluate a research project, all the way from design to publication, from an ethical standpoint. Importantly, during this dynamic course, students will also be encouraged to reflect on the impact of new technologies and social trends on research ethics and discuss their ideas on how to build adequate codes of conduct to regulate research activity.

This paper provides a series of reflections on making the case to senior leaders for the introduction of clinical ethics support services within a UK hospital Trust at a time when clinical ethics committees are dwindling in the UK. The paper provides key considerations for those building a business case for clinical ethics support within hospitals by drawing upon published academic literature, and key reports from governmental and professional bodies. We also include extracts from documents relating to, and annual reports of, existing clinical ethics support within UK hospitals, as well as extracts from our own proposal submitted to the Trust Board. Furthermore, our perceptions of the purpose of, and perceived needs met through, clinical ethics support needs to shift to one of hospitals investing in their staff.
