And the reproductions do demonstrate that when composers, directors, choreographers, writers and pictorial artists, all eminent in their fields, are allowed to combine their talents, one can get fine theater indeed.
It will not. But the mere combination of first rate talent in the creative roles does not quite do it either. Salvador Dali is perhaps the perfect example of what can be right and wrong with the painter as the main element in theater. He can make a real world premiere, as Edwin Denby says, that is, something immediately theatrical and non-pedantic. And he can completely demolish whatever show may be going on around him. But, by and large, this volume shows that the real artist who can produce heartwarming or scintillating theatrical effects, is a true challenge to the theatrical specialists in decor, who are shown up as lazy-men of the Project MUSE promotes the creation and dissemination of essential humanities and social science resources through collaboration with libraries, publishers, and scholars worldwide.
