Motivated by issues at a manufacturer of customized- and standard messenger bags, we develop an iterative two-stage framework involving marketing and operations models to determine the conditions under which a firm benefits from production spackling. With spackling, the firm uses flexible capacity to produce custom products as demanded each period,.

We consider a single-stage multiproduct manufacturing facility producing several end-products for delivery to customers with a required customer lead-time. The end-products can be split in two classes: few products with high volume demands and a large number of products with low-volume demands. In order to reduce inventory costs, it seems efficient to produce the high-volume products according to an MTS policy and the low volume products according to an MTO policy.

Integrated Production-Inventory planning with make to order and make to stock considerations

Since accuracy of the forecasts will prevent excess inventory and opportunity loss due to stockout, the issue here is how to forecast demands accurately. MTS Make to Stock literally means to manufacture products for stock based on demand forecasts, which can be regarded as push-type production. MTS has been required to prevent opportunity loss due to stockout and minimize excess inventory using accurate forecasts. In the industrialized society of mass production and mass marketing, this forecast mass production urged standardization and efficient business management such as cost reduction. As an economy expands, the income of consumers increases and so demand also continuously increases. Demand changes according to the boom and bust cycle of the economy. Even if demand decreases and inventory increases, inventory will turn into cash one day when demand recovers.

Make to order MTO is the process of products manufactured upon a business receiving a customer's order.

Make to order MTO is a business production strategy that typically allows consumers to purchase products that are customized to their specifications. The make to order MTO strategy only manufactures the end product once the customer places the order, creating additional wait time for the consumer to receive the product but allowing for more flexible customization compared to purchasing directly from retailers' shelves. Dell Computers is an example of a business that uses the MTO production strategy wherein customers can order a fully customized computer online and receive it in a couple of weeks. Make to order, also referred to as build to order BTO or made to order MTO , is a manufacturing process in which the production of an item begins only after a confirmed customer order is received.

Make to Order Vs Make to Stock: Key Differences
