The so-called information explosion of recent decades is a major factor in changing this perception. The present matrix of rules, however, cannot easily be overlaid with a simple set of principles for selecting a preferred name among the systematic alternatives, and to declare a preference by arbitrary fiat in each situation would surely lead to widespread rejection. Therefore, IUPAC has initiated projects to formulate a comprehensive guide for selecting unique names that will, insofar as feasible, have good recognition value and general acceptance among chemists.

Nomenclature of Organic Chemistry: IUPAC Recommendations and Preferred Names 2013

The "preferred IUPAC nomenclature" provides a set of rules for choosing between multiple possibilities in situations where it is important to decide on a unique name. It is intended for use in legal and regulatory situations. Preferred IUPAC names are applicable only for organic compounds , to which the IUPAC has the definition as compounds which contain at least a single carbon atom but no alkali , alkaline earth or transition metals and can be named by the nomenclature of organic compounds. Rules for the remaining organic and inorganic compounds are still under development. The full draft version of the PIN recommendations "Preferred names in the nomenclature of organic compounds" , Draft of 7 October is also available.

Knowing these rules and given a structural formula, one should be able to write a unique name for every distinct compound. For details on it including licensing , click here. Prepared for publication by Henri A. Favre and Warren H. The ever-increasing number and complexity of known compounds have resulted in a major extension of the Blue Book. New sections cover the naming of new classes of compounds, such as fullerenes, and new nomenclature systems, such as phane. At the same time it became necessary to make chemical nomenclature more systematic in order to increase the number of names with an explicit relationship to the structure of the compound, and so that the reader or listener can more easily and unambiguously identify a chemical species and deduce its structure from the name.

Preferred IUPAC name

Chemical nomenclature is used to identify a chemical species by means of written or spoken words and enables a common language for communication amongst chemists. Nomenclature for chemical compounds additionally contains an explicit or implied relationship to the structure of the compound, in order that the reader or listener can deduce the structure from the name. This purpose requires a system of principles and rules, the application of which gives rise to a systematic nomenclature. Of course, a wide range of traditional names, semisystematic or trivial, are also in use for a core group of common compounds. Detailing the latest rules and international practice, this new volume can be considered a guide to the essential organic chemical nomenclature, commonly described as the "Blue Book".
