Hegel, Kant and the Structure of the Object (eBOOK)

Along with J. Fichte and, at least in his early work, F. The most systematic of the post-Kantian idealists, Hegel attempted, throughout his published writings as well as in his lectures, to elaborate a comprehensive and systematic philosophy from a purportedly logical starting point. Until around , Hegel devoted himself to developing his ideas on religious and social themes, and seemed to have envisaged a future for himself as a type of modernising and reforming educator, in the image of figures of the German Enlightenment such as Lessing and Schiller. Fichte — In the s the University of Jena had become a center for the development of critical philosophy due to the presence of K. Reinhold — and then Fichte, who taught there from until his dismissal on the grounds of atheism at the end of the decade.

Home Issues X-2 Symposia. In order to develop his pragmatist and inferentialist framework, Robert Brandom appropriates, reconstructs and revises key themes in German Idealism such as the self-legislation of norms, the social institution of concepts and facts, a norm-oriented account of being and the critique of representationalist accounts of meaning and truth. However, these themes have an essential ethical dimension, one that Brandom has not explicitly acknowledged. Furthermore, I argue that, in real situations as opposed to ideal ones , claims to normative authority cannot be considered independently from the legitimacy of those claims, a legitimacy that Brandom is unable to reasonably explain. It is because of this relationship to the world that individuals are able to express conceptual content.

According to the logic of a traditional reductio ad absurdum argument, if the premises of an argument lead to a contradiction, we must conclude that the premises are false—which leaves us with no premises or with nothing. We must then wait around for new premises to spring up arbitrarily from somewhere else, and then see whether those new premises put us back into nothingness or emptiness once again, if they, too, lead to a contradiction. Because Hegel believed that reason necessarily generates contradictions, as we will see, he thought new premises will indeed produce further contradictions. As he puts the argument, then,. Hegel provides the most extensive, general account of his dialectical method in Part I of his Encyclopaedia of Philosophical Sciences , which is often called the Encyclopaedia Logic [EL]. The moment of understanding sublates itself because its own character or nature—its one-sidedness or restrictedness—destabilizes its definition and leads it to pass into its opposite.

Immanuel Kant: Metaphysics

He is considered one of the fundamental figures of modern Western philosophy , with his influence extending to the entire range of contemporary philosophical issues, from aesthetics to ontology to politics , both in the analytic and continental tradition. Hegel's principal achievement was his development of a distinctive articulation of idealism , sometimes termed absolute idealism , [33] in which the dualisms of, for instance, mind and nature and subject and object are overcome. His philosophy of spirit conceptually integrates psychology , the state , history , art , religion and philosophy. His master—slave dialectic has been influential, especially in 20th-century France.

In his doctrine of transcendental idealism , Kant argued that space and time are mere "forms of intuition" which structure all experience , and therefore that while " things-in-themselves " exist and contribute to experience, they are nonetheless distinct from the objects of experience. From this it follows that the objects of experience are mere "appearances", and that the nature of things as they are in themselves is consequently unknowable to us. In it, he developed his theory of experience to answer the question of whether synthetic a priori knowledge is possible, which would in turn make it possible to determine the limits of metaphysical inquiry. Kant drew a parallel to the Copernican revolution in his proposal that the objects of the senses must conform to our spatial and temporal forms of intuition , and that we can consequently have a priori cognition of the objects of the senses. Kant believed that reason is also the source of morality , and that aesthetics arise from a faculty of disinterested judgment.

Immanuel Kant is one of the most influential philosophers in the history of Western philosophy. His contributions to metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, and aesthetics have had a profound impact on almost every philosophical movement that followed him. This article focuses on his metaphysics and epistemology in one of his most important works, The Critique of Pure Reason. It is impossible, Kant argues, to extend knowledge to the supersensible realm of speculative metaphysics.
