Berlin and Kay's work proposed that the basic color terms in a culture, such as black , brown , or red , are predictable by the number of color terms the culture has. If a culture has three color terms, the third is red. If a culture has four, it has either yellow or green.

Why just turquoise? Remarks on the evolution of color terms

Berlin and Kay's work proposed that the basic color terms in a culture, such as black , brown , or red , are predictable by the number of color terms the culture has. If a culture has three color terms, the third is red. If a culture has four, it has yellow or green. Berlin and Kay posit seven levels in which cultures fall, with Stage I languages having only the colors black dark—cool and white light—warm. Languages in Stage VII have eight or more basic color terms. This includes English, which has eleven basic color terms.

Brent Berlin and Paul Kay. The work reported in this monograph was begun in the winter of in a graduate seminar at Berkeley. Many of the basic data were gathered by members of the seminar and the theoretical framework presented here was initially developed in the context of the seminar discussions. Much has been discovered since, the date of original publication, regarding the psychophysical and neurophysical determinants of universal, cross-linguistic constraints on the shape of basic color lexicons, and something, albeit less, can now also be said with some confidence regarding the constraining effects of these language-independent processes of color perception and conceptualization on the direction of evolution of basic color term lexicons. This landmark book written in defined modern understanding of how language is used to describe and label color. The Berlin and Kay proposal does not relate to ideas of common inheritance of color words in different languages that could link to such suggested linguistic groupings as Proto-World and the Nostratic family. Instead, the authors suggest that common color categories arise out of a similar evolutionary process in developing color words in unrelated languages. Two basic views The book starts by outlining the two basic schools of thought regarding color words in different languages. One viewpoint sees languages as coding color experience in independent and unique manners. Therefore, there would be no expectation of any universal semantics of color terms with this type of thinking. Berlin and Kay, however, using their experience with three unrelated language families came to a different hypothesis.

The location of the foci of green and blue in the perceptual color solid indicates that there is space for a derived color term between these two hues. Diachronic and synchronic linguistic studies on color term lexica explain that a term for turquoise is likely to develop into a derived basic color term in the Kay and McDaniel definition , at present in languages of industrialized countries.
