Fatigue-related durability and reliability performance is one of the most important concerns in many engineering applications, such as for ground vehicles, aircrafts, and power generation systems. To achieve these goals, a number of accelerated testing methods have been developed, with some of them being applied very successfully to engineering applications. Because the ability to assess the fatigue life of an engineering component or system from the accelerated testing results is of great importance, the verification and validation of the accelerated testing methods is becoming critical to properly interpret the predicted results and decision making.

An in-situ corrosion sensor was used to obtain electrochemical impedance spectroscopy EIS measurements on coated panels under a variety of accelerated laboratory test conditions as well as ambient exposure at a Florida beach. Three studies are reported. For coatings with minimal edge defects, the two methods gave equivalent results. For coatings with edge defects, the sensor was able to detect the defects provided the surface was wet, as in the salt fog chamber. In contrast, the conventional approach was unable to detect defects unless they were within the confines of the clamp-on cell.

Novel accelerated random vibration fatigue test methodology and strategy are proposed, which can generate a design of the experimental test plan significantly reducing the test time and the sample size. Based on theoretical analysis and fatigue damage model, several groups of random vibration fatigue tests were designed and conducted with the aim of investigating effects of both Gaussian and non-Gaussian random excitation on the vibration fatigue. First, stress responses at a weak point of a notched specimen structure were measured under different base random excitations. According to the measured stress responses, the structural fatigue lives corresponding to the different vibrational excitations were predicted by using the WAFO simulation technique. Second, a couple of destructive vibration fatigue tests were carried out to validate the accuracy of the WAFO fatigue life prediction method. After applying the proposed experimental and numerical simulation methods, various factors that affect the vibration fatigue life of structures were systematically studied, including root mean squares of acceleration, power spectral density, power spectral bandwidth, and kurtosis. The feasibility of WAFO for non-Gaussian vibration fatigue life prediction and the use of non-Gaussian vibration excitation for accelerated fatigue testing were experimentally verified.

Accelerated life testing is the process of testing a product by subjecting it to conditions stress , strain , temperatures, voltage, vibration rate, pressure etc. In polymers , testing may be done at elevated temperatures to produce a result in a shorter amount of time than it could be produced at ambient temperatures. Many mechanical properties of polymers have an Arrhenius type relationship with respect to time and temperature for example, creep, stress relaxation, and tensile properties. If one conducts short tests at elevated temperatures, that data can be used to extrapolate the behavior of the polymer at room temperature, avoiding the need to do lengthy, and hence expensive tests. For instance, a reliability test on circuits that must last years at use conditions high longevity would need to yield results in a much shorter time. If the test wanted to estimate how frequently the circuits needed to be replaced, then the category of low failure would also be applicable.
