This is one of those books you'll return to again and again for head-shaking accounts of how weird and wonderful this world can sometimes be. Sometimes the medium is more valuable than the message, and that is true of this third edition of Unexplained! Should warm the heart of any serious observer of the weird world in which we live.

This book describes a wide variety of speculations by many authors about the consequences for humanity of coming into contact with extraterrestrial intelligence. The assumptions underlying those speculations are examined, and some conclusions are drawn. As necessary background, the book also includes brief summaries of the history of thinking about extraterrestrial intelligence, searches for life and for signals, contrasting paradigms of how contact might take place, and the paradox that those paradigms allegedly create. This book is an entertaining read, covering diverse strange topics as hairy hominids, black dogs, green fireballs UFOs , teleportation stories, mermaids, as well as a few famous hoaxes.

Clark writes with a surprisingly skeptical viewpoint but not excessively so for a cryptozoologist. Many of the phenomena discussed in the book he critiques as having too little evidence to support a belief in. However, he doesn't bash the given phenomena either. In short I'd recommend this book to any student o This book is an entertaining read, covering diverse strange topics as hairy hominids, black dogs, green fireballs UFOs , teleportation stories, mermaids, as well as a few famous hoaxes.

In short I'd recommend this book to any student of anomalous phenomena. Apr 13, Jack Tyler rated it really liked it. I bought this as a reference or "inspiration" book when I was writing fantasy. It turned out to be a very enjoyable read as well. My granddaughter read it at the age of ten, all pages of it, and had a ball doing it.

Fans of Coast-to-Coast, a call-in radio show where guests are required to have frequent flyer miles on th I bought this as a reference or "inspiration" book when I was writing fantasy. Fans of Coast-to-Coast, a call-in radio show where guests are required to have frequent flyer miles on the mother ship, will immediately recognize the various oddities and anomalies chronicled in this tome. In fact, Whitley Strieber, an occasional host of Coast-to-Coast who has logged more miles on the mother ship than I have on State 94, has his own section under Shapes in the Sky.

I don't suggest that you should believe everything or anything that's in here, nor does the author, who merely examines what little evidence there is for the various sightings, but this is great source material for any fantasy, horror, or paranormal writer. From the Ancient Astronaut Society to the White River Monster, if a sighting has been claimed, it's written up between these pages.

I strongly recommend it to any writer who falls into the categories mentioned. It is, as I say, great source material, and I defy any writer of the creepy, weird, or macabre who's worth his salt to remain blocked with this baby sitting smugly by the keyboard.

Great stuff, lots of fun. Oct 23, Kimmy rated it it was amazing Shelves: This is the second edition of this book that I've owned, and I haven't regretted a single penny I've spent.

Clark is perhaps a bit more open-minded than I would be about some of the subjects, but he is meticulous about his research. Every entry, no matter how odd or obscure, is accompanied by a list of references. All carefully res This is the second edition of this book that I've owned, and I haven't regretted a single penny I've spent. All carefully researched to include both historical and modern beliefs and reports.

Fortunately, Clark writes in an engaging style, occasionally with tongue-in-cheek and never with the unnerving slightly mad earnestness of so many experts in anomaly. Basically, if you like weird stuff, this one's for you. Feb 25, MeatAndPotatoes rated it it was amazing. Awesome book. Covers cryptids, phenomena, and other unexplained things as the title suggest. I felt as if some of the sections went on for too long while others were cut to short. There was a noticeable bias that pointed into the author believing in these things were true, but at the end of each section, he included research or theories that were done to disprove the mystery so it tends to balance out.

As I said, this book is quite extensive. It featured many new cryptids I wasn't aware of so it Awesome book. It featured many new cryptids I wasn't aware of so it's worth a read if you're into this kind of stuff. Oct 09, Paige rated it really liked it. Solid reference material of weird. Does a good job of presenting multiple theories and is not afraid to say when something is completely implausible.

Very readable, especially well suited to short reads as the entries don't tend to be more than two or three pages each. This book was a great source for the paranormal and the unexplained.

I look forward to the new edition. This book does an excellent job in recounting eyewitness testimony and debunking those incidents that were deemed most likely to be a hoax. It is a MUST for those of you interested in the unexplained or the paranormal. This book has given me great research idea This book was a great source for the paranormal and the unexplained. This book has given me great research ideas Jan 15, Drew Perron rated it it was amazing.

The really interesting thing about this book is that it holds everything up to the light of critical thinking. It points out when a legend is based on inadequate data and hearsay It gives you the data and lets you decide.

Highly recommended. Jan 08, Joshua Vine rated it really liked it. Some very interesting stuff. Some of the more unbelievable could have been left out. Feb 05, Jo rated it it was ok. This is fun. Too much word, not enough pictures.

Mar 04, Bibliofiendlm rated it it was ok Shelves: swon , nonfiction , low-ratings. Based on the fun topic, I thought this would be more interesting.

I think teens would be curious to read it, but the black and white pictures and such make it pretty boring. Feb 09, Cm2dude rated it it was amazing. Quite Interesting Read Sep 12, David Reynoso rated it liked it. Was kinda long but good overall. Aug 13, Molly rated it liked it. I have not read the first and second. The author relates first-hand accounts honestly to the point that they become somewhat redundant how many times can I read about specific yet similar sea serpent stories?

I also thought the formatting was weird. Certain subjects had their own chapters while others were put in as separate little blurbs in chapters, but often had nothing to do with the chapters they were placed in like Ringing Rocks within a chapter on Merbeings. It just made for choppy reading.

Contact with Alien Civilizations

Everything you wanted to know about the dirty little secrets our government hides from us is right here in this incredible book. Conspirators will gain some much needed insight. Author Kevin Randle offers an interesting analysis. A retired Army Lieutenant Colonel, he has a unique take on the documents, operations, and intelligence that form the bulk of the evidence on the sightings or incidents. If you like this type of book, this is still going to be worth reading. Between the vintage photos and educated analysis, it's going to provide you a few nights of reading pleasure.

Fler böcker av Jerome Clark
