There has therefore been increasing interest in membrane reactors from both the scientific and industrial communities, stimulating research and development.
There are 3 fundamental ideal types of reactors. Laboratory reactors are almost exclusively related to these ideal forms. Additional complications to the descriptive or "design" equations are introduced by the presence of multiple phases. Mathematical descriptions of the 3 ideal reactor types are based on essentially nothing more than mass and heat balances. These descriptive equations relate the various parameters of the reaction system such as temperature, reaction rate, conversion, flow rate, and reactor size.

Chemical engineers design reactors to maximize net present value for the given reaction. Designers ensure that the reaction proceeds with the highest efficiency towards the desired output product, producing the highest yield of product while requiring the least amount of money to purchase and operate. Normal operating expenses include energy input, energy removal, raw material costs, labor, etc.
