- Chemical reactor
The reactors, in which chemicals are made in industry, vary in size from a few cm 3 to the vast structures that are often depicted in photographs of industrial plants. For example, kilns that produce lime from limestone may be over 25 metres high and hold, at any one time, well over tonnes of materials.
Metrics details. This article describes the use of biofilm reactors for the production of various chemicals by fermentation and wastewater treatment. In UASB granular biofilm particles are used.

Membrane reactors are increasingly replacing conventional separation, process and conversion technologies across a wide range of applications. Exploiting advanced membrane materials, they offer enhanced efficiency, are very adaptable and have great economic potential. There has therefore been increasing interest in membrane reactors from both the scientific and industrial communities, stimulating research and development.
There are 3 fundamental ideal types of reactors. Laboratory reactors are almost exclusively related to these ideal forms. Additional complications to the descriptive or "design" equations are introduced by the presence of multiple phases. Mathematical descriptions of the 3 ideal reactor types are based on essentially nothing more than mass and heat balances. These descriptive equations relate the various parameters of the reaction system such as temperature, reaction rate, conversion, flow rate, and reactor size.

The present chapter is aimed to provide a simplified overview of the catalytic reactors used in chemical industry. Each reactor type is described in terms of its key geometric properties, operating characteristics, advantages, and drawbacks among its alternatives and typical areasofuse. Thesignificanceof the reactors isexplained in the context of selected industrial examples. Industrial reactors that do not involve the use of solid catalysts are also discussed.
A chemical reactor is an enclosed volume in which a chemical reaction takes place. The design of a chemical reactor deals with multiple aspects of chemical engineering. Chemical engineers design reactors to maximize net present value for the given reaction. Designers ensure that the reaction proceeds with the highest efficiency towards the desired output product, producing the highest yield of product while requiring the least amount of money to purchase and operate. Normal operating expenses include energy input, energy removal, raw material costs, labor, etc.
