The philosophy of education examines the goals, forms, methods, and meaning of education. The term is used to describe both fundamental philosophical analysis of these themes and the description or analysis of particular pedagogical approaches. Considerations of how the profession relates to broader philosophical or sociocultural contexts may be included. For example, philosophers of education study what constitutes upbringing and education, the values and norms revealed through upbringing and educational practices, the limits and legitimization of education as an academic discipline, and the relation between educational theory and practice. In universities, the philosophy of education usually forms part of departments or colleges of education. Plato's educational philosophy was grounded in a vision of an ideal Republic wherein the individual was best served by being subordinated to a just society due to a shift in emphasis that departed from his predecessors. The mind and body were to be considered separate entities.
Just as curriculum can be defined in a variety of ways, one can approach the evaluation and creation of curriculum through more than one foundational lens: philosophical, historical, psychological, and sociological. All four of these hold importance in influencing curriculum and instruction. The philosophical foundation of curriculum helps determine the driving purpose of education, as well as the roles of the various participants. While all foundations propose to set goals of curriculum, philosophy presents the manner of thinking from which those goals are created. Philosophies vary in perception of truth, ranging from absolute to relative, and from moralistic to scientific As we look through the lens of history, we see how philosophies have gained and waned in popularity in society, and how even psychological research is embraced, ignored, or even rejected based on philosophical standings of the time. Exploring the historical foundations of curriculum can promote a sense of freedom and encourage educational reform.

This master's program is based in democratic philosophy and the philosophy of social reconstructivism: schools are seen as sites for examining, interpreting, and critiquing society, and for developing citizen skills and knowledge to constantly reconstruct society to better reflect democratic values and practices at its core. Working in urban or rural settings presents both opportunities and challenges for teachers, community service providers, or public officials who needs to understand the social and political environment and their histories in order to better help the communities and constituencies whom they serve. We recognize that most of our master's students bring extensive experience working in schools and other community institutions, and thus bring to the program pressing issues and the desire to develop both background knowledge and research skills to address them.
