Lisa Thomlins and Sarah Hunter – the munki mash

Lisa Thomlins - credit Sarah HunterHow could I not have heard of which has recorded so many of my favourite bands right here in central Wellington? Trinity Roots, Hollie Smith, Grayson Gilmore, Fur Patrol, Shihad and many many more have all been recorded in this old spy vault.

But now after 25 years, this building is another to be demolished, and the legendary Munki studios needs to move on. But before they do, there is going to be one hell of a last recording bash there, this weekend, with so many of our best bands all jumping in to honour the music studio that helped make them. And this momentous occasion will be streamed live worldwide, so wherever you are you can join the bands for the final recording at Munki and even help out on the boosted campaign.
Welly’s own “20 feet from Stardom” star Ms Lisa Tomlins and one of Welly’s  music scene backbones, Sarah Hunter, talk about why this weekends live stream is so significant.

Jim Scott and Max-A-Million – it’s a family affair

Jim+Max

After creating an institution with their Friday Night Drive show on , DJ’s Jim Scott and Max-A-Million celebrated their last show after 5 years.

No big deal perhaps – except they are a father and son duo. In fact Max was practically bought up around the studio as Jim has been contributing to the Radio Active air waves for around 30 years.

I managed to grab this interview with them before Max left for overseas, in which they reflect on what it was like to be a father and son team, their family love of music and the funny things about their time on air together.

Check out the song at the end of the interview. It was the last song Jim played on their last show, Family Affair by Mary J. Blige

Pat Robins – great films from a great grandmother

Pat_robins

Pat Robins has been a constant female presence in the NZ film industry since the 1970’s. She was also part of the pioneering travelling show Blerta who created their own unique style of entertainment at a time when when New Zealand was merely following what was going on overseas. Blerta consequently spawned a crux of New Zealand’s best creatives of which quite a few are Pat’s family.  Now as a great grandmother she is still driven to direct another of her own films, called . Wow.

In this interview I had the wonderful opportunity to speak to Pat live on , about her interesting life, and why she is getting such incredible support from family, friends and some top actresses.

In this interview Phillipa talks about how she saw art in this devastation and made an exhibition of it, which is on now on at .

Phillipa also reveals some interesting stories about Danny Lemon in the South Island high Country,  the positive thing she saw in the community through Danny’s sad loss and the simple reason why she wanted to help him out.
